Let's say your body is a representation of the Tao, or the whole. Assume that a single life cell, such as a piece of skin, has a consciousness within that skin cell. It is an individual life.
Now suppose this skin cell is then cast off from the whole. This, of course, represent a fragment of the Tao being cast off. This is a representation of us, who are fragments of the Tao.
The skin cell passes through all sorts of different complications, turbulence, and trials. The skin cell also passes through all sorts of joys, successes, and excitement as well. But this cell senses it is part of something grander, and once that cell learns of the grander beginnings, it wishes to establish itself with that grander purpose. It doesn't necessarily want to rejoin, for it has learned much and experienced much, but wishes too understand and communicate to discover its roots and beginnings. It also desires to learn of its future as well as what possibilities lay ahead.
It is your energetic self that is enjoying this freedom and knowledge, but senses more to it and wishes to learn and comprehend more. So your energetic self reaches out in an unconscious or non-mental manner and establishes contact with the total energies that make the Tao. These energies are then felt within the energetic self and slowly digested and mentally communicated to the physical self, which then can consciously understand it. It is then a person gains insight and improves.
